What does this test measure?
Measures the level of Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) in the blood — a hormone made by the pituitary gland that stimulates the thyroid to produce its hormones (T4 and T3).
Why is it ordered?
The most sensitive initial test for thyroid function. A high TSH usually indicates an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), and a low TSH usually indicates an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). Used for diagnosis and treatment monitoring.
