— Test information
What does this test measure?
Measures the level of prolactin in the blood — a pituitary hormone responsible for stimulating milk production and breast development. It rises naturally during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Why is it ordered?
Used to assess pituitary function and reproductive hormone balance. A high level (hyperprolactinemia) may cause menstrual disturbances, infertility, and abnormal milk production in women, and low libido and reduced testosterone in men, and may indicate a pituitary tumor.
