What does this test measure?
Measures the level of procalcitonin (PCT) in the blood — a protein whose level typically rises in response to systemic bacterial infection.
Why is it ordered?
Used to help distinguish bacterial from viral infection and assess the likelihood of systemic infection (sepsis), and to guide and monitor antibiotic treatment decisions. It is not interpreted alone but within the full clinical picture.
