What does this test measure?
Measures only free thyroxine (T4) — the unbound portion able to enter tissues and exert its effect.
Why is it ordered?
Reflects thyroid function more accurately than total T4, especially when blood proteins change. Used with TSH to diagnose an underactive or overactive thyroid.
