What does this test measure?
Measures the level of Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) in the blood — a protein that can rise in pancreatic and gastrointestinal cancers.
Why is it ordered?
Used mainly to monitor the response of pancreatic and some gastrointestinal cancers to treatment and watch for recurrence, not for diagnosis alone. It can also rise in benign conditions (such as liver and bile-duct diseases), so it is interpreted within the full clinical picture.
