What does this test measure?
Vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), the main end-product of catecholamine metabolism excreted in urine, reflecting total adrenaline and noradrenaline production.
Why is it ordered?
Increased urinary VMA is associated with catecholamine-secreting tumours such as phaeochromocytoma, neuroblastoma and paraganglioma.
