What does this test measure?

α-Amylase, an enzyme produced mainly by the exocrine pancreas and salivary glands that hydrolyses carbohydrates.

Why is it ordered?

Chiefly used to diagnose pancreatic disease such as acute or chronic pancreatitis; hyperamylasaemia may also occur in renal insufficiency, abdominal conditions, salivary gland lesions, macroamylasaemia and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Normal range

Serum (37 ºC): 22–80 U/L
