What does this test measure?
Albumin, the most abundant protein in human plasma, which maintains colloid oncotic pressure and transports many compounds.
Why is it ordered?
Low albumin (hypoalbuminaemia) occurs in liver disease, malnutrition, malabsorption, inflammation and renal or gastrointestinal protein loss; high values are seen mainly in dehydration.
Normal range
Adults: 3.5–5.0 g/dL (35–50 g/L)
