What does this test measure?
Uric acid, the major end-product of purine catabolism obtained partly from the diet and partly from endogenous synthesis.
Why is it ordered?
Hyperuricaemia results from urate overproduction or defective elimination and is commonly associated with gout, decreased renal function, dehydration and myeloproliferative disorders.
Normal range
Men: 3.5–7.2 mg/dL · Women: 2.6–6.0 mg/dL
