What does this test measure?
Unsaturated iron-binding capacity (UIBC), the reserve capacity of transferrin to bind iron; serum iron plus UIBC equals total iron-binding capacity (TIBC).
Why is it ordered?
A decrease occurs in haemochromatosis, iron poisoning, active cirrhosis and acute hepatitis, while an increase occurs in iron-deficiency anaemia; it should not be used alone to test for iron deficiency.
