What does this test measure?

Triglycerides, esters of glycerol and fatty acids from the diet or synthesized mainly in the liver, transported by lipoproteins to provide energy.

Why is it ordered?

Elevated triglycerides may be caused by liver disease, diabetes mellitus, nephrosis, hypothyroidism, alcoholism and familial hyperlipoproteinaemia.

Normal range

Normal: < 150 mg/dL · Borderline-high: 150–199 mg/dL · High: 200–499 mg/dL · Very high: ≥ 500 mg/dL
