Total Protein

What does this test measure?

Total serum protein, most of which is synthesized by the liver, except the immunoglobulins produced by plasma cells.

Why is it ordered?

Hyperproteinaemia occurs with dehydration or increased specific proteins (immunoglobulins in chronic infection, multiple myeloma); hypoproteinaemia occurs with haemodilution, impaired synthesis (malnutrition, chronic liver disease, malabsorption) or protein loss.

Normal range

Adults (ambulatory): 6.4–8.3 g/dL (64–83 g/L)
