— Test information
What does this test measure?
Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), a measure of the total amount of iron that serum proteins — nearly all transferrin — can bind.
Why is it ordered?
TIBC is usually increased in iron-deficiency anaemia and decreased in haemochromatosis, iron poisoning, active cirrhosis and acute hepatitis, but should not be used alone as a test for iron deficiency.
Normal range
Adults: 250–425 μg/dL
