What does this test measure?
Protein in urine and cerebrospinal fluid, which the glomeruli normally filter according to protein mass, charge and plasma concentration.
Why is it ordered?
Proteinuria occurs in nearly all kidney diseases (nephrotic syndrome, glomerulonephritis); elevated CSF protein occurs with raised intracranial pressure or infection (meningitis, encephalitis).

Urine: < 150 mg/24 h · CSF (adults): 150–450 mg/L
