Phosphorus

What does this test measure?

Inorganic phosphorus, about 80% of which is present in the body as calcium-phosphate salts of bone, the remainder in carbohydrate metabolism, phospholipids and nucleic acids.

Why is it ordered?

Hypophosphataemia results from intracellular shift, increased renal or gastrointestinal loss and decreased intestinal absorption; hyperphosphataemia is usually secondary to renal failure or hypoparathyroidism.

Normal range

Adults: 2.5–4.5 mg/dL
