What does this test measure?

Magnesium, one of the most abundant cations in the body, stored mainly in bone and acting as a cofactor for enzymes of respiration, glycolysis and cation transport.

Why is it ordered?

Serum magnesium is increased in dehydration, severe diabetic acidosis, Addison's disease and impaired glomerular filtration, and decreased in gastrointestinal malabsorption, renal losses from diuretics, hypoparathyroidism and alcoholism.
