What does this test measure?
LDL cholesterol, the main lipoprotein transporting cholesterol from the liver to the tissues.
Why is it ordered?
Increased LDL cholesterol is positively correlated with atherosclerotic disease, myocardial infarction and stroke, and is raised in nephrosis, diabetes, obesity, smoking and by some drugs.
Normal range
Optimal: < 100 mg/dL · Near optimal: 100–129 · Borderline-high: 130–159 · High: 160–189 · Very high: ≥ 190 mg/dL
