Iron Ferrozine

What does this test measure?

Serum iron, of which only about 0.1% of total body iron is present in plasma bound to transferrin.

Why is it ordered?

Serum iron is increased in haemochromatosis, iron poisoning, active cirrhosis and acute hepatitis, and decreased in many patients with iron-deficiency anaemia and chronic inflammation; it should not be used alone to identify iron deficiency.

Normal range

Men: 70–180 μg/dL · Women: 60–180 μg/dL
