— Test information
What does this test measure?
Immunoglobulin M (IgM), which accounts for 5–10% of circulating immunoglobulins in adult serum and is mostly a pentamer.
Why is it ordered?
IgM is decreased in inherited or acquired immunoglobulin deficiencies; it is increased in primary viral and blood-stream infections (e.g. malaria) and primary biliary cirrhosis, and monoclonal IgM rises in Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia.
