What does this test measure?

Immunoglobulin A (IgA), which makes up about 10–15% of serum immunoglobulin and occurs in monomeric and dimeric forms.

Why is it ordered?

IgA is decreased in inherited or acquired immunoglobulin deficiencies; it is increased in skin, lung, gut and renal infections and cirrhosis, and monoclonal IgA rises in multiple myeloma and other plasma-cell disorders.
