What does this test measure?
HDL cholesterol, the high-density lipoprotein fraction that removes cholesterol from tissues and transports it to the liver.
Why is it ordered?
Low HDL cholesterol is positively correlated with atherosclerotic disease, myocardial infarction and stroke, and is reduced in liver disease, malnutrition, diabetes, and by smoking.
Normal range
High risk: ≤ 35 mg/dL · Low risk: > 60 mg/dL
