What does this test measure?
HbA1c, the product of irreversible condensation of glucose with haemoglobin A, proportional to the mean blood glucose over the preceding 6–8 weeks.
Why is it ordered?
A valuable adjunct to glucose measurement for assessing and following up diabetes mellitus, providing more reliable long-term glycaemic monitoring; it may also aid in the diagnosis of diabetes.
Normal range
Non-diabetic: 4.0–6.5% · Goal: 6.0–7.0% · Good control: 7.0–8.0% (NGSP-DCCT)
