What does this test measure?
Alanine aminotransferase (ALT/GPT), a transaminase whose highest concentrations are found in the liver and kidney.
Why is it ordered?
Serum ALT is elevated in hepatitis and other liver disease with necrosis (mononucleosis, cholestasis, cirrhosis, liver metastases, drug effects) and may also rise in skeletal or cardiac muscle disease.
Normal range
37 ºC: up to 41 U/L (up to 65 U/L with pyridoxal phosphate)
