What does this test measure?
Aspartate aminotransferase (AST/GOT), a transaminase found in highest concentration in liver and heart muscle, and also in skeletal muscle, kidney and pancreas.
Why is it ordered?
Serum AST rises in hepatitis and other liver disease with necrosis (mononucleosis, cholestasis, cirrhosis, liver metastases) and after myocardial infarction, in skeletal muscle disease, acute pancreatitis and haemolysis.
Normal range
37 ºC: up to 40 U/L (up to 50 U/L with pyridoxal phosphate)
