Creatinine

What does this test measure?

Creatinine, a catabolic end-product of creatine produced in proportion to muscle mass and freely filtered by the glomerulus.

Why is it ordered?

Measured almost exclusively to assess kidney function (impaired renal perfusion, loss of functioning nephrons) and to monitor renal dialysis.

Normal range

Jaffé non-compensated — Men: 0.9–1.3 mg/dL · Women: 0.6–1.1 mg/dL; Jaffé compensated — Men: 0.7–1.2 mg/dL · Women: 0.5–0.9 mg/dL
