What does this test measure?

Copper in serum, plasma or urine, most of which is bound to ceruloplasmin, measured to assess copper imbalance.

Why is it ordered?

Low serum copper is most significantly associated with Wilson's disease (with reduced ceruloplasmin), and also with osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and Menkes' syndrome; copper is elevated in leukaemia, haemochromatosis and biliary cirrhosis.
