What does this test measure?
Complement component C4, a protein essential for activation of the classical complement pathway.
Why is it ordered?
C4 is modestly increased by the acute-phase response; it is decreased by consumption in immune-complex disease and in complete C4 deficiency, which is strongly associated with autoimmune disease such as systemic lupus erythematosus.
Normal range
Adults: 10–40 mg/dL
