What does this test measure?
Complement component C3, a protein of the complement system involved in both the classical and alternative activation pathways.
Why is it ordered?
C3 is often increased as an acute-phase response (inflammation, trauma, tissue necrosis) and in biliary obstruction; it is decreased in genetic or acquired deficiencies, which raise the risk of infection with encapsulated bacteria.
Normal range
Adults: 90–180 mg/dL
