What does this test measure?

Total bilirubin, a waste product from the breakdown of haemoglobin that is transported to the liver, conjugated and excreted in bile.

Why is it ordered?

Raised bilirubin (hyperbilirubinaemia) causes jaundice; unconjugated elevation occurs in newborns and haemolysis, while conjugated elevation occurs in hepatitis, cirrhosis and biliary cholestasis.

Adults — Total: up to 2.0 mg/dL · Direct: up to 0.3 mg/dL
